About

National Coming Out Day is an annual LGBTIQ+ awareness day observed on October 11, to support lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer people in "coming out of the closet". First celebrated in the United States in 1988, the initial idea was grounded in the feminist and gay liberation spirit of the personal being political, and the emphasis on the most basic form of activism being coming out to family, friends and colleagues, and living life as an openly lesbian or gay person. The foundational belief is that homophobia thrives in an atmosphere of silence and ignorance, and that once people know that they have loved ones who are lesbian or gay, they are far less likely to maintain homophobic or oppressive views especially if they live in developed countries. Your donation will empower COC Netherlands, Aidsfonds, Transgender Netwerk, and Netherlands organisation for sex diversity to develop more supportive activities and actions in the Netherlands in favor of our very diverse LGBTIQ+ communities: school programs, youth, autistic, gay, lesbian, trans, senior, and refugees, health care and prevention.

COC Nederland

Founded in 1946, COC Netherlands is the world’s oldest operating LGBTI organization. Through a federation of 20 local associations and a team of over 40 staff and hundreds of volunteers, it empowers LGBTI individuals and communities both in the Netherlands and internationally. Using an “inside-out” approach, it offers funding, coaching, training, and access to UN consultative status to support local activists, strengthen movements, and promote social change globally.

Stichting Aidsfonds - Soa Aids Nederland

Aidsfonds works toward a world without new HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths, and aims to find a cure. It focuses on reaching marginalized communities—globally and in the Netherlands—through education, prevention, testing, and access to treatment. The organization also invests in cure research and partners with local communities, scientific researchers, and donors to drive systemic, inclusive approaches in HIV/AIDS response.

Stichting Transgender Netwerk Nederland

TNN advocates for the human rights and inclusion of transgender and non-binary individuals. Their mission is to ensure freedom, bodily autonomy, and legal recognition for gender-diverse people, enabling them to contribute their talents in a safe and accepting society. TNN’s core values—gender inclusivity, justice, proactivity, accessibility, and vigilance—guide their advocacy, policy advice, community support, and efforts to drive positive societal change.

NNID, Expert center for sex diversity

NNID Foundation promotes the emancipation and visibility of intersex individuals. Founded on 8 July 2013, it supports depathologization—ending unnecessary medical interventions—and advocates for informed, human rights–centered care. The organization provides scientifically sound, accessible information for professionals and the general public, aiming to foster acceptance of sex diversity in society.
