Cyclone Idai Disaster Response and Recovery Fund

About

On March 14th, 2019 Tropical Cyclone Idai, which wreaked havoc across five countries, reached its peak intensity. Approximately 2.6 million people have been affected across five countries. Through a single tax deductible donation to the Fund, you can help provide short-term and long-term response and recovery to multiple organization initiatives. Our Fund approach is informed by expert and local recommendations, based on up to date information from disaster philanthropy and nongovernmental organization networks. The Fund's strategy is similarly dynamic and responsive: as information on local communities needs becomes available, we will update the organizations in this Fund, directing donations towards specific organizations doing work in the areas most affected. We have initially selected organizations that are on the ground assisting with immediate relief needs, including rescue efforts, medical assistance, and providing access to clean water, food and shelter. Our approach is primarily informed by the Center for Disaster Philanthropy.

International Rescue Committee (IRC)

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is on the ground in the hardest hit areas providing medical care, supplies, and kits for women. The IRC immediately launched an emergency response to assess the damage and deliver medical care and supplies, food and dignity kits to those in need; The IRC continues to monitor the damage and is ready to scale up our response; however, it is urgent that international donors make emergency funding available to shore up a response commensurate with the needs.

Care

CARE is on the ground providing for the most basic needs of survivors. CARE’s emergency experts, as part of a coalition of humanitarian organizations, coordinated with the government of Mozambique to assess the damage while providing search and rescue support around Beira. CARE has sent 13 trucks to the cyclone-affected area, carrying 500 tents, 200 roles of plastic sheeting and rope for temporary shelter, 2800 family kits and over 2000 hygiene and family packages containing items such as soap, buckets, mosquito nets, blankets, tarpaulins, and water canisters to reduce risk of disease.
